Dream Circle Biography
Dream Circle is an electronic/world/hip-hop band from Brooklyn formed in 2011 by artists husband and wife, Katy & Joel Mejia. Their music is a spiritualized genre-bending journey into electronic, house, hip-hop, dub reggae and African music. Walker, who is originally from Austin, TX, met Mejia, the second generation Dominican and Bronx, NY native, while producing a music video and playing for another band that eventually broke up.
After participating in a group sound meditation session, they realized they needed to create their own band and Dream Circle was born. The songs came easily and soon their debut album Lost Art was released in 2013 on Unemployable Music. The album’s stand out tracks are “So Many Things”, “School of Life”, and the dub reggae infused “Original”. On their first album, they also collaborated with vocalist Nikkie Bliss (who performs with the band), multi-instrumentalist Ben Zwerin who tours with Anjelique Kidjo, rapper Johnny Voltik and singer/songwriter, Stephanie Morrillo.
“So Many Things” (The Remixes) was released July 2014 and features deep house remixes by OP! (I Love Vinyl/Dubspot) & Doctrations from Rotterdam, Netherlands and features a spaced-out hip-hop remix by A-frillz that drew a comparison to Flying Lotus.
In 2014 for their third release, they teamed up with budding producer and composer, Pherixx, who put his spin on his favorite tracks from their debut album, Lost Art. In remix fashion, each track on “The Pherixx Remixes” provides an interesting take on the original version. From the dance-floor friendly retro house remix of ”The Hurricane” to a futuristic hip-hop remix of the dub-reggae infused ”Original”, to ”School of Life” which features rapper, Los, and the lush downtempo re-imaginings of ”Space Born” and ”Dark Star”, Pherixx undoubtedly breathes new life into the songs.
On 11/11/15 they premiered their first feature documentary film, Time is Art: Synchronicity & the Collective Dream in a sold out NYC theater, which features their music along with many other talented artists.
Soul Technology, their second LP, continues to bring forth the same message of positive soul empowerment. With rave responses from indie music lovers, and the European underground music scene, their following continues to grow as people feel touched by their mission to celebrate the human soul and a conscious existence. Dream Circle believes that “art should ultimately disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed”. Their latest release, Soul Technology Remixes, features the talented rapper, Omboy Rome aka ELE47N, and songs remixed by producers from all over the world from Malta to Estonia.
Recently, they released several singles “Chains” and “Divorced from the Divine” featuring ELE47N, and will continue to release new songs building up to the release of their third album inspired by the documentary Time is Art: The Frequency of Love about ELE47N’s spiritual and musical journey.
