Teaching Artist

As an educator, I use media to create meaningful experiences, songs and videos with children and youth. For four years I was a Career & Technical Education teacher in the Bronx. I hold a New York state teaching certification in the Arts, Audio/Video Technology and Communications. At Crotona International High school in the Bronx. I also launched a CTE Internship program which employed over 40 immigrant students every year. I have worked with many different non-profits and homeschool groups with students ages 6 and up.

Project-based learning is my passion. Some of the projects I have designed include: “What is Home?” songwriting workshop for ESLs, Video Poems, Community song, World music music production project, “Design Your Life” entrepreneur project, Cultural Exchange and Video Pal program, Community song and music video project. You can listen to all the music produced by my past 11th grade students on soundcloud here.

Makers.com and Reel Works Teen Filmmaking created an all girls editing workshop in the summer of 2016. As lead instructor, Katy guided six talented young women through the process of editing short form interviews highlighting inspiring women changemakers. They learned how to use Adobe Premiere and After Effects as well as how to edit from transcripts in order to create paper cuts. Some students even created original music using Garageband!  Those that finished their videos early learned out to create a logo sting for their production company. I also worked with Reel Works and HBO to lead a 4 week workshop on scoring music to trailers and scenes from Star Wars using Garageband on the iPad.
